Without a Foundation: Built on hopes and dreams
We recently encountered a concerning situation in Norwood with an addition that had been constructed without a proper foundation. Instead of using concrete, the structure relied on a wooden post in direct contact with the ground. Over time, the wood rotted due to constant exposure to moisture from the soil. It was surprising that the addition hadn’t collapsed given its unstable condition.
Building an addition without a foundation might seem like a cost-saving measure initially, but it often leads to significant problems and expenses down the road. In this case, addressing the structural issues required substantial effort and expense. Not to mention the added cost and complexity of removing part of the existing deck for access.
To rectify the situation, we proposed a comprehensive solution. We excavated to pour new footers below the frost line and constructed a new wall using concrete block and steel. This approach ensures the addition is now built to last, meeting safety standards and providing long-term stability.
Cutting cost, is it worth it?
It’s crucial to emphasize that while shortcuts in construction may appear economical initially, investing in a proper foundation from the outset is essential for avoiding future complications and costs. Proper planning and execution ensure the safety, durability, and value of any home addition over time.
