The Wrong Pipe
This single-family home, built in 1955 in the Springfield Township suburb of Cincinnati, faced significant drainage issues due to deteriorated and inadequate drainpipe. The existing system included a mix of corrugated plastic pipe and Orangeburg pipe.
We frequently warn homeowners that corrugated plastic drainage pipes offer only a temporary solution. Orangeburg pipe, made from asphalt-impregnated fiberboard is a similar solution that was never intended to last. Commonly used from the WWII housing boom until the 1970s, Orangeburg pipes were considered cost-effective and lightweight, but prone to brittleness and failure. Designed for a lifespan of about 50 years under optimal conditions, Orangeburg pipes often failed within just 10 years. Consequently, most modern building codes now exclude Orangeburg pipe from acceptable materials.

Cracks in the foundation
In addition to the drainage issues, this home’s rear wall developed horizontal cracks in the concrete. This was likely due to rust expansion from steel reinforcing rods placed too close to the surface. Vertical shrinkage cracks were also present in the same area. The homeowner made the right choice by consulting an engineer to inspect these cracks. It is crucial to have an engineer evaluate cracks before any repairs to identify the type of crack and recommend the best repair method. The engineer confirmed the cracks were structurally sound but advised filling them with epoxy to prevent potential water seepage. As a result, Hughes Construction was hired to inject 48 linear feet of cracks with epoxy.
The solution
To tackle the drainage problems and safeguard the foundation from excess water, Hughes Construction developed and implemented a comprehensive drainage solution. We installed new schedule-40 PVC pipes connected to the downspouts, which then fed into two catch basins. Schedule 40 PVC should last up to 100 years before potential issues arise, are less susceptible to tree roots, and essentially maintenance-free. This solution was expertly designed to handle even the heaviest downpours effectively.
