A steel column in a garage needed replacement.
We typically require a licensed structural engineer for all foundation repairs. This safeguards homeowners from unnecessary costs or improper repairs. Engineers are knowledgeable professionals who prioritize your best interests and do not have a sales agenda. We aim to ensure you receive the correct repair the first time, without any extra hassle or pushy sales gimmicks.
However, we recently undertook a foundation repair project that didn’t necessitate a licensed structural engineer, as it involved simply replacing an existing structural element. In this case, we replaced a rusted steel support column in a garage that had deteriorated at its base, jeopardizing the structural integrity of the space.
Why is rust so destructive?
Rust can have a significant impact on both concrete and steel. When steel begins to rust, it expands, which can lead to cracking and spalling in surrounding concrete. This not only weakens the support structure but can also create safety hazards over time. Addressing rust issues promptly is crucial to maintaining the integrity of any structure.
To ensure safety, we first shored up the garage, providing temporary support while we worked. Once everything was secure, we carefully removed the old post and installed a new 4″ steel column. As you can see in the photo below, the new column on the right is larger and thicker than the old one, enhancing its ability to bear its load for the long term.

Final touches
After the installation, Our team patched the concrete underneath to restore a solid foundation. To prevent future rust issues, we coated the new column with an anti-rust primer.
This project not only improved the structural stability of the garage but also helped extend its lifespan. We completed the entire project in just two days, a week after the client first reached out to us.
If you have any concerns about the support structures in your own garage or property, please do not hesitate to reach out.
