When One Engineer Isn’t Enough: Why a Second Opinion Mattered for This Foundation Repair

We recently completed a project in Cincinnati’s Price Hill neighborhood for a homeowner who reached out to us after a frustrating experience with a previous engineer. Although he had been concerned about spalled concrete on his rear foundation wall, the initial report he received left him with very little clarity and no real path forward.

An Overly Complicated Report Without a Clear Solution

The first engineer’s report was lengthy and filled with technical language. However, instead of offering a clear repair plan, it presented vague possibilities—like constructing a full interior sister wall or completely replacing the existing foundation wall. These ideas sounded serious (and expensive), but there was no actual design included, nor were any next steps outlined. In the end, the report concluded that a proper repair plan was outside the scope of the evaluation.

This left the homeowner confused. Despite paying for a professional opinion, he was still in the dark about what the real issue was—and how to address it.

A Straightforward Second Opinion

Fortunately, after speaking with us, the homeowner was referred to a structural engineer we often recommend. This second opinion offered a much more focused approach.

Instead of recommending an invasive and costly rebuild, the engineer noted that the concrete damage—while visible—did not affect the structural integrity of the foundation. His recommendation was simple: remove the loose material and patch the area with proper bonding agents. This kind of practical guidance was exactly what the homeowner needed—clear, efficient, and appropriate for the actual condition.

A Practical Repair That Solved the Problem

With that guidance, we were able to complete the repair quickly and effectively. There was no need for demolition or extensive reconstruction. Instead, we restored the foundation using standard patching techniques, leaving the homeowner with peace of mind—and without an overwhelming invoice.

What This Experience Teaches Us

This project highlights an important point: not all engineers take the same approach. While every situation is different, it’s crucial that the professionals you hire not only identify problems but also provide actionable, realistic solutions.

That’s why we always recommend doing your homework before hiring an engineer—and why we’re careful about who we refer our clients to. A well-written report doesn’t mean much if it doesn’t get you closer to a real resolution.

Our Approach: Practical. Honest. Reliable.

At Hughes Construction, we focus on solving problems the right way. When a project requires an engineer, we’ll connect you with someone who can offer real solutions—not just a long report. For straightforward issues, we make sure the work gets done efficiently and without unnecessary steps or expense.

And if you’ve already received a report that feels more confusing than helpful? It’s worth getting a second opinion. Often, the simplest fix turns out to be the right one.
