Addressing Drainage Challenges on Sloped Properties
Homes built on hillsides often face drainage issues. Water naturally follows gravity and can collect in unwanted areas. Over time, this runoff can lead to soil erosion, pooling near foundations, and damage to landscaping. These problems tend to worsen if they are not addressed early. We recently completed a drainage project for a homeowner whose property sloped toward the back of the lot. The homeowner was experiencing erosion and water movement that needed to be redirected safely away from the home.

A Thoughtful Drainage Consultation Process
The project began with a drainage consultation at the property. During this visit, our estimator used laser grade levels to understand where water naturally wants to travel across the yard. This allows us to develop a reliable plan even if it hasn’t been raining recently. The consultation also gives us time to talk through the homeowner’s concerns and goals for the property.
We don’t use salespeople. The same estimator who evaluates the site also designs the solution and oversees the project from start to finish, which helps reduce the chance of mistakes or miscommunication. We do charge a fee for the consultation, and that fee is credited back toward the project if the homeowner decides to move forward. Every drainage plan is customized to the property, since no two yards handle water the same way, especially on sloped terrain.

Custom Drainage Solution for Long-Term Erosion Control
To address the erosion concerns, we installed new underground drain piping. The piping was routed through the backyard and extended down the hill. This allowed the water to discharge in an area that was less prone to erosion. By moving the water away from unstable soil, we reduced the risk of further ground loss. This also helps protect nearby landscaping and improves long-term drainage performance.
Capturing Runoff Near the Driveway
In addition to the yard drainage, we installed a large commercial-grade drain box near the driveway. This drain captures water that previously flowed downhill toward the side of the house. Intercepting the water at this point helps prevent soil erosion along the foundation. It also reduces the amount of water reaching vulnerable areas during heavy rain events.
A Practical and Durable Drainage Outcome
This project demonstrates how a well-designed drainage system can protect a property. Redirecting water properly reduces erosion and improves site stability. With a custom solution in place, the homeowner can feel confident their drainage issues have been addressed for the long term.
