Structural Repair & Glass Block Installation in Fort Thomas, KY
We recently worked on a 100+ year-old home in Fort Thomas, Kentucky, a suburb of Cincinnati. The homeowner noticed signs of foundation movement and took the right step by consulting licensed structural engineer Mike Montgomery for an assessment.
Engineer’s Findings:
- The rear portion of the left-side foundation wall had an outward lean of 1-1/4” per 48”, likely due to long-term minor settlement. While the movement wasn’t severe, the engineer advised ongoing monitoring to ensure it didn’t worsen.
- Inside, the basement floor was a concrete slab with a floor drain. Cracks were present, most likely caused by shrinkage during curing and minor movement over time. Despite this, the slab remained functional.
- The exterior walls were brick masonry, with the left-side wall showing a similar outward lean. As with the foundation, keeping an eye on the movement was recommended.
- Above the basement window, the wood lintel had damage from wood-boring insects. Left unaddressed, this could weaken the structure further. Replacement was the best solution.
The Solution:
To restore structural integrity, we replaced the damaged lintel with a new, durable support. The homeowner also wanted to improve security and weather resistance, so they requested a glass block window in place of the old basement window.

Unlike traditional windows, glass block windows offer multiple benefits. Supplied by Cincinnati Glass Block Company, these windows are:
✅ Better security – Harder to break than traditional windows
✅ Weather resistance – Sealed tight against moisture and drafts
✅ Energy efficiency – Helps regulate indoor temperatures
✅ Low maintenance – No need for repainting or refinishing
This project not only addressed structural concerns but also enhanced the home’s security and efficiency.
